Schiavo Library: April 2014 Newsletter

Schiavo Library: April 2014 Newsletter

National Library Week -
National Library Week is April 13 – 19th. This year we are honoring a volunteer. Ruth Nickelsberg is our official “Star” Volunteer. Thanks Ruth for being here when we need you!

Mahjong -
The mahjong group is alive and well. Join them here at the library on Tuesday evenings at 7:00pm. Call the library for more information: (609) 486-6265.

Bird watching for Children -
A local bird watcher has donated two new books to our library: The Young Birder’s Guide by Bill Thompson III and National Geographic Kids Bird Guide of North America by Jonathan Alderfer. These books are a great way to start a lifelong interest in birding for your kids or grandkids. (p.s. binoculars make a nifty gift, too) Thanks for the donation, Chuck!

Save the date -
Our FIFTH annual Memorial Day Used Book Sale is scheduled for May 23 – June 14th. Used books are filling up the library. Please come and grab some bargains.

Ideas Welcome -
Soon we will be celebrating the library’s FIFTH ANNIVERSARY. Yes, hard to believe, the library’s dedication was five years ago on June 26th, 2009. So, we’re looking for some great ideas to help us celebrate. Email your ideas to: info@strathmerelibrary.org  - Hope to hear from you soon.

SIA Newsletter 4 1 2014 - Strathmere's Snowy Owl Kills Great White Shark - Leaves Remains On Beach

To All Strathmere and Whale Beach Homeowners and Visitors,

Quite a scene as our snowy owl looks back on the remains of her kill,

and then “dares” us to level criticism of her littering!

As you’ve probably (hopefully) guessed, this is our April Fools Day edition.

The photos above were taken by Greg Bennett at the end of Williams Road on Sunday evening. We don’t know how much longer she’ll stay around, as our weather (finally) starts to warm up a bit.

Here’s an encouraging sign that someone believes the boating season is drawing near. On March 27, channel markers were placed to keep boats off the sandbar...

This past Saturday, the Strathmere Fishing and Environmental Club held its popular “State of the Fisheries” forum, with some important guests.

You can read about it on the SFEC website here. Note especially remarks by Mayor Rich Palombo.

Those of us in town are now using our new trash and recycling carts.

The Township has attached a mechanism to the rear of the trucks used here so that the collector just has to roll the cart to the back of the truck, push a button, and the cart is tipped up and emptied. Pretty cool!

Mildred’s Restaurant opens this Friday April 4.

We’ll try to let you know as other Strathmere establishments reopen.
