Anniversary Celebration
The anniversary party, June 25th, was a great opportunity to celebrate the Schiavo Library’s first very successful year and also enjoy family, friends and desserts.
New Books at the Library:
Novels:
The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest by Stieg Larsson
Shanghai Girls by Lisa See
Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford
Swan Thieves by Elizabeth Kostova
Non-fiction:
The Big Short by Michael Lewis
No One Would Listen by Harry Markopolos
Strathmere Favorites:
Volunteer Marion Ingram recommends: The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. This story takes place in Nazi Germany during WWII and portrays the life of the ordinary German citizen. Liesel Meminger, a nine year old girl who cannot read, picks up her first book in the snow near her brother’s grave. Thus she is given the nickname “book thief” by the Grim Reaper, the narrator of the story. (available in our Young Adult and beach book sections)

SIA Newsletter - Big weekend coming up!
To all Strathmere and Whale Beach Homeowners and Visitors,
What a great Fourth of July Parade! Pictures can be seen here.
Lots of "stuff" coming in Strathmere this weekend!
**First, there will be a book signing at the Schiavo Library from 6:30 to 8:00, Thursday evening, July 8, featuring Carol Plum-Ucci, an author of young adult books such as The Body of Christopher Creed (set in the South Jersey woods).
**On Friday night 7/9 at 8:00 pm, we'll have our SIA meeting at the Firehouse. We'll conduct a little business, but the main event is a Dessert Competition! Please bring your favorite homemade dessert and your appetite for sweets, and help us pick a winner!
**On Saturday morning at 10:00 am, the Strathmere (formerly Olympics) Games will be held on the Randolph Road beach (the Olympics people gave the Strathmere Olympics a hard time for using the name and it had to be pulled from the Internet). It's a great spectator sport! Participant registration will be from 5:00 to 8:00 Friday evening at 700 Bayview Drive. For $35, you'll get a tee shirt, catered lunch, a day of great fun and a chance for an award. There are both morning events on the beach and afternoon events at the bay. Contact Gar Bacon at garbacon@comcast.net for more info. Here are beach and bay pictures from previous years:
**Saturday evening (6:00 pm) is one of the highlights of the Strathmere summer season. The SFEC is holding its Summer Social at the Firehouse. The public is invited, and tickets are only $20, which includes grilled chicken and ribs, plenty of beverages, a DJ and even a (benefit) jewelry sale. A link to pictures of last year's event is here. The Strathmere Improvement Association includes all owners and many visitors to Strathmere and Whale Beach. It was founded over 50 years ago as a community organization with the simple objective of making Strathmere a better place. We are proud of the organization's many accomplishments over the years. Our thanks to all who have paid their SIA Dues ($10 annually per adult). The dues and fund raisers provide for distributing the trash regulations, mailing the post cards, funding the Fourth of July Parade, and our share of the Star Party and Christmas Party. In the past, we've also donated money to help pay for extra State Police protection. If you have adult children or relatives (or visitors) who visit Strathmere, please forward this message to them - perhaps they'd like to be members and receive these e-mail messages also.
You can contact us by responding to this e-mail sia6@comcast.net or by mailing SIA at PO Box 57 in Strathmere.
Thanks to all for your continuing support!

On display in the Strathmere Library Mini Museum
Currently on display in the Strathmere Library's Mini Museum is a small display of vintage swimsuits and accessories and photos of ladies in swimsuits from the beaches of Strathmere. The photos feature swimsuits from the Teens to the 1940s and they are photos that have been shared with the Strathmere website over the years. The swimsuits are from my personal collection (in case you didn't know, I am a vintage clothing dealer and collector) The swimsuits weren't actually worn in Strathmere, they are just an example of the styles of swimsuits worn during the timeframe featured in the photos. Stop in the lobby of the library and check out the display.
