Strathmere 4th of July Parade and other upcoming events

To all Strathmere and Whale Beach Homeowners and Visitors,

Get your floats, wagon, bikes and ideas ready for the Fourth of July Parade!

Since the Fourth, and the parade, falls on a Sunday, service at the Strathmere Church will begin a half-hour earlier (at 9:00) and the parade will start a half-hour later - at 11:00 am.
Registration will be at 10:00 and judging at 10:30. As always, awards and refreshments following the parade will be at the Deauville Inn. Since we had no entries in the coaches and strollers division last year, we've combined that with "mixed walkers". See above for the new categories. The Strathmere Improvement Association includes all owners and many visitors to Strathmere and Whale Beach. It was founded over 50 years ago as a community organization with the simple objective of making Strathmere a better place. We are proud of the organization's many accomplishments over the years. Our thanks to all who have paid their SIA Dues ($10 annually per adult). The dues and fund raisers provide for distributing the trash regulations, mailing the post cards, funding the Fourth of July Parade, and our share of the Star Party and Christmas Party. In the past, we've also donated money to help pay for extra State Police protection. If you have adult children or relatives (or visitors) who visit Strathmere, please forward this message to them - perhaps they'd like to be members and receive these e-mail messages also.

You can contact us by responding to this e-mail sia6@comcast.net or by mailing SIA at PO Box 57 in Strathmere.

Thanks to all for your continuing support!

SIA Community Yard Sale - 6/26 - at the Strathmere Firehouse

To all Strathmere and Whale Beach Homeowners and Visitors,
This Saturday morning, from 8:00 am until noon, the SIA will be sponsoring a "Yard Sale" at the Firehouse! Come on over and find some "shore bargains"!

In addition to finding some treasures on our many tables, enjoy mingling with your neighbors and refreshments for everyone!
We'll also have a table chock full of "Strathmere Stuff" - tee shirts, tote bags, caps and visors.

We still have a few tables not yet spoken for, if you have some goodies that you just don't need anymore...
E-mail Linda at lcbateman@comcast.net  with questions or to reserve a table.

If you'd like to help out, we need some volunteers to help set up at 7:15. You'll be all done in about 20 minutes!

Thanks to everyone who has sent us their dues payment. Remember, it's just $10 per adult family member, and you can send it to SIA at PO Box 57 in Strathmere.

Beach photos 6/19

The Point and other beaches look like they held up pretty well during the Winter storm season this year. But I noticed within the past few weeks that some erosion is starting on the Point. On the Bay side of the Point, which was the last section to be replenished last year, the water is starting to carve into the Point in front of the homes there. Those exposed piles were covered over during replenishment last year.

The Point heading north to Ocean City is nice and big

The ocean side of the Point looks like it's starting to slope off gradually now.

Walking further south on the ocean side, you can see the ridge where waves are chunking away at the beach more noticeably.

A closer shot of the erosion ridge. It's about 2ft high

No Dogs - No Fair!

Remember the good old days when you could take your dogs out on the Point year round?
There's a section of the Point and several other areas along the dunes that are roped off for the nesting birds. Yes, they should be roped off, I get that the birds are endangered and they shouldn't be disturbed during their nesting season.
But it would be nice if there was a section of beach in Strathmere where we were allowed to take our dogs. Doggies love the beach and most are very well behaved.

I've seen one of the environmentalist who monitor the birds, telling people to get their dogs off the beach. OK, I guess that's part of their job, to protect the nesting area. But I also saw that environmentalist walk right by two empty water bottles and a plastic cup without picking them up. Aren't those a danger to the birds too? I guess it's not their job to pick up trash on the beach. It's not my job either, and it is kinda gross, but I do it anyway.

A message from the Strathmere Improvement Association - A busy week in Strathmere

To all Strathmere and Whale Beach Homeowners and Visitors,
In this issue: General Slocum Ceremony; Busy Past Weekend; Fourth of July Parade

A ceremony Tuesday morning  will recognize one of the worst maritime disasters of all time, that eventually ended up as a wreck just off the coast of Strathmere.
On June 15, 1904, the excursion ship General Slocum had been chartered by St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church in the Little Germany district of Manhattan. Shortly after the ship got underway a fire broke out on board. By the time the General Slocum was beached at North Brother Island, just off the Bronx shore, an estimated 1,021 people had been killed by fire or drowning, with only 321 survivors. This was the worst disaster in the history of New York City until the 9/11/2001 attacks.
After the fire, the General Slocum was converted to a barge named Maryland, which sank in 1911 off Strathmere's beach, not far from Putnam Road, where the Schiavo Library stands today.
The ceremony has been organized by Captain Ronald Sinn and will start at 10 a.m. on the beach near the Schiavo Library in Strathmere. After the service, Capt. Sinn will be at the library to answer questions and share his wealth of pictures and information about the General Slocum.

Below are some websites for more information on the tragedy.

This past weekend was a busy one in Strathmere.
On Friday evening, the SIA held our first meeting of the year. A great turnout, shown below, listened attentively to Christine Rohrman, Director of our Schiavo Library, describe events planned for the library this summer. The group enjoyed wine, cheese, beer and fellowship!

On Saturday evening, the Strathmere Fishing and Environmental Club, in conjunction with presenting awards for its Surf Fishing Tournament, held a benefit dinner in honor of our good friend, the late Jerry Bonsall, to benefit his son Matthew.
Here Matthew displays a trophy received for his catch earlier in the day, and then helps Randy select the fifty-fifty winner:

Jerry's family posed in a group, and then Brian gave a very moving remembrance of his brother...

and finally, the "Last Call"....

Also on Saturday evening, the Citizens for Strathmere and Whale Beach held a cocktail party at the bayfront home of Paul and Lydia Krueger.

Here is former Governor Jim Florio with George Welker

and many distinguished Strathmerians were in attendance:

Don't forget to get your floats and ideas ready for the Fourth of July Parade! This year the Fourth, and thus the parade, falls on a Sunday. Therefore service at the Strathmere Church will begin a half-hour earlier (at 9:00) and the parade will start a half-hour later - at 11:00 am. Registration will be at 10:00 and judging at 10:30. Strathmere Improvement Association Newsletter

To all Strathmere and Whale Beach Homeowners and Visitors,

In this issue: SIA Upcoming Events: Meeting Friday (Wine, Cheese & Beer); Yardsale June 26
Strathmere Stuff for Sale; Fourth of July Parade; Dues Are Due

This issue will primarily be dedicated to upcoming SIA events.

Meeting Friday: This Friday evening at 8:00 pm, we will be holding our first meeting of the year. We'll be serving wine and cheese (and some cold beer), so come out to the firehouse and socialize with your Strathmere neighbors! Christine Rohrman, Director of our Schiavo Library, will be on hand to describe some of the events planned for the library this summer. Please come!

Yardsale: On Saturday morning, June 26, from 8:00 am until noon, the SIA is sponsoring a yardsale, downstairs at the firehouse. Attached are both a flyer and a registration form. For just $15.00, you will have an eight-foot table to present all those items you've been meaning to get rid of anyway! Linda Bateman and Janet Mahley are co-chairing this event, with help from Donna Diefenderfer. If you don't have need for a table, come out and get some great bargains - and enjoy free refreshments!  Questions to lcbateman@comcast.net  or 'phone (609) 263-4117.

SIA Bylaws: A committee has been working diligently for some months on updating the Bylaws. We expect to complete a draft to distribute via a newsletter in time to vote on the new version at the July 9 Meeting.

Fourth of July Parade: This year the Fourth, and thus the parade, falls on a Sunday. Therefore service at the Strathmere Church will begin a half-hour earlier (at 9:00) and the parade will start a half-hour later - at 11:00 am. Registration will be at 10:00 and judging at 10:30. As always, awards and refreshments following the parade will be at the Deauville Inn.

Strathmere "Stuff": Last year we offered tee shirts, caps and visors, and sold out of almost everything. This year, we'll again be offering a limited number of Strathmere adult shirts ($10), caps ($15) and visors ($12). Last year, we did not sell as many children's shirts as expected, so we'll be offering them at half-price ($5). These shirts come in children's extra-small, small, medium, large and adult small (same size as children's large, but longer).

We are also offering very attactive and useful "tote bags". These are similar to reusable grocery bags - but larger (and their's don't say "Strathmere"!). They are invaluable for many things around the home or as a beach bag, and are available for $2.50 each, or three for $7.00.

We'll have the tote bags available at Friday's meeting, and shirts, bags, hats and visors are almost always available at 212 Bayview Drive (call 263-6846 first so you don't waste a trip).

Future SIA Meeting Schedule: We'll be meeting at the Firehouse at 8:00 pm on the second Friday of each month; June 11, July 9, August 13 and September 10.

SIA Dues are due at $10 annually per adult. The dues and the fund raisers provide for the trash regulations, mailing the post cards, funding the Fourth of July Parade, and our share of the Star Party and Christmas Party. In the past, we've also donated money to help pay for extra State Police protection. If you have adult children or relatives (or visitors) who visit Strathmere, please forward this message to them - perhaps they'd like to be members and receive these e-mail messages also.
Please send dues payments to SIA at PO Box 57, Strathmere, NJ 08248. Remember to tell us your e-mail address!
