Schiavo Library: November 2016 Newsletter

Schiavo Library: November 2016 Newsletter

Vote Here: Nov. 8
This year voters in Strathmere will be using the library instead of the fire hall. Voting is here from 6 am to 8 pm. Regular library business will be conducted between 10-4pm.

Revised Check-out Periods
For the winter we will extend check-out periods for books (and audiobooks) to 30 days and for DVDs to 14 days. Don’t forget: you can always renew by phone or email.

Audiobooks
Audiobooks are gaining in popularity. According to the Audio Publishers Association audiobook sales in 2015 totaled $1.77 billion, up 20.7% over 2014. WOW! Do you like to listen to a good story? My husband and I especially enjoy audiobooks on long drives in the car. Email and let me know your favorite audiobooks and when you like to listen. (info@strathmerelibrary.org)
The library has over 100 titles from David Baldacci to Danielle Steel. And this time of year you may borrow them for 30 days. Come in and choose a favorite story to take traveling.

A Lovely Addition
Thanks to the Strathmere Improvement Association we have a lovely addition to our children’s section: a bench with a custom cover. Thank you SIA and Linda Bateman – the children will love it!

Thanksgiving The library will be closed for Thanksgiving on Thursday and Friday. Melissa will be here on Saturday with normal hours.

Special Alert!! 3 burglaries in town, polling location change

Special Alert
from the Strathmere Improvement Association
October 16, 2016        sia1912@comcast.net

18210535-vector-illustration-of-cartoon-thief.jpg

Heads up! There have been three recent break-ins in town. One north, one in the middle, & one down south. They appear to be happening in the early dawn hours (3 am). The burglar/burglars used forced entry and have taken tvs, computers, jewelry, etc. Be sure all your windows and doors are locked, and also take a walk around your neighbors' houses. Stay safe!

Change in Voting Location
If you normally cast your vote at the Firehouse (Voting District 11), please note that the new polling place is the Schiavo Library, 801 S Commonwealth. Postcards have been mailed to registered voters informing them of the location change.

October roundup: Beach cleanup, electric bills, Christmas party, Strathmere Stories

October roundup: Beach cleanup, electric bills, Christmas party, Strathmere Stories

Strathmere Improvement Association October Update

Beach Cleanup Reminder: The SFEC invites you to join in this Saturday, 9 am, beginning at Seaview and the beach. Please wear gloves; trash bags will be provided.  Later that day, everyone is invited to a special presentation by Mr. Hugh Carberry, Director of the NJ Artificial Reef Program, concerning the history and current state of the New Jersey artificial reef program. 4:00 pm at the Firehouse. Refreshments will be served!

Check Your Electric Bill! A few folks in town have noticed big jumps in their electric bills. The CFSWB advise all to compare recent statements with last year's. Some meters have been found to be faulty. Customer service number is 800.642.3780. Have your account number and service address ready.

Recycling Reminder: While not as exciting as saving $$ on your utility bill, it is a good time to review your recycling when in Strathmere. All recycling materials must be loose-please no plastic or trash bags. If you bag your recycling, it will go into the trash containers, not recycling. As another reminder, please do not use the trash and recycling containers on beach ends for your household trash.

Save the Date!  The annual Christmas party will again be held at the Deauville on December 10. Details to follow. The SIA and Fire Company are co-sponsors.

Strathmere Stories Roll On: We are continuing our video archive project and invite you to view some of the raw footage on youtube. If you have a story you'd like to add, please email us at sia1912@comcast.net. Wouldn't it be fun to get some of your family's memories on camera? We have some very user-friendly camcorders and can also help you get started. Visit our "channel" on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC5Z1aBKhyjZag1UM9lzV1vQ

After a long, rainy end to summer, a spectacular autumn finally broke through. The moon and the stars at night, along with our trademark sunrises and sunsets, have been putting on quite a show. It's a special time in Strathmere and Whale Beach!

Schiavo Library: October 2016 Newsletter

Schiavo Library: October 2016 Newsletter

October 18: Snapshot Day
This day highlights New Jersey libraries. Librarians all over the state report what was happening in their libraries that day. The statistics are amazing! For example, last year on Snapshot Day over 287,000 people visited their local library, 190,000 items were circulated, over 37,000 reference questions were answered and over 1,300 programs were offered. Yeah, New Jersey! We love our libraries!

And the winner is…
The winner of our popularity contest, that is.
Our most popular books this summer were Dead Wake: the last crossing of the Lusitania by Erik Larson and Property of a Noblewoman by Danielle Steel.
Children’s books: Big Nate flips out by Lincoln Pierce and Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli
DVD: Bridge of Spies
Children’s DVD: Zootopia

Mah Jongg
Mah Jongg continues here at the library, but days and hours vary. Everyone welcome; just call the library to get up-to-date information.

Have you read these?
Here are some of the new books just ordered for the Schiavo Library:

If you have suggestions for new books for our collection, please call or email (609 486-6265 or info@strathmerelibrary.org).
We love to hear from our patrons.

Thanks for your donations all year around. We use the proceeds from our used book sales to buy the new bestsellers.

Used Book Sale
Our SEVENTH annual “Welcome Summer” Used Book Sale is still going strong. The sale continues until at least June 17th. Stop in; we have TONS of books left!

Lucky Seventh Anniversary
We are celebrating 7 great years here at the Schiavo Library! Stop in on June 30th – we will be open 10 – 8pm and celebrating with cupcakes and balloons.

Here are some fascinating statistics:
• In 2009 the library opened with 643 items in the collection. We now have over 4,000.
• The DVD collection has exploded. In 2009 we had 10 DVDs. Now we have 732!
• We have 2 annual used book sales; profits have increased from around $400 in 2010 to $773 at our last sale in the fall. And the book sales bring in tons of people: we had 407 people come to the last sale.

In the Spotlight… Joan DeFiore, Summer Library Assistant

As a life-long summer resident of Strathmere, I was thrilled when they built the new library. I was asked to work here just days after my retirement from the School District of Philadelphia. This is my eighth summer here and I really enjoy interacting with all the different people using the library.

Summer Programs & Events Preview
Our summer programs will begin on July 5th. The schedule is very similar to last year. Some new programs include: Adult Coloring on Thursday morning, Two Art Exhibits, a Family Art Project for our Anniversary and a Family Bingo Night. Brochures will be available in a few days & more details in the July newsletter.
