SIA Newsletter 5 24 2012 - Memorial Day; SFEC Tourney; Lifeguards; CFSWB; SIA Raffle; Book Sale; Calendar; SIA "Dues"

To All Strathmere and Whale Beach Homeowners and Visitors,

Happy Memorial Day Weekend!!

Please remember the reason for Monday's Holiday - to honor those in the military who gave their lives in the service of our country. Please fly your flag and take some time to remember and honor those who fell.

On a more mundane note, both trash and recycling will be picked up Monday morning.

If you missed the SFEC benefit dinner and awards at the Firehouse Saturday, you missed a good time! Some pictures of the event are here.

We won't have lifeguards on the beach this weekend, but there will be a skeleton crew available in the station at Williams and the beach to respond to 911 calls, from Friday to Monday and also June 2 - 8 and 11 - 15. A few beaches will have coverage on June 9 - 10, with full beginning coverage on June 16.

The Citizens for Strathmere and Whale Beach are holding a meeting at the Firehouse Saturday morning at 10:00 am, to last less than one hour! All Strathmerians are invited, whether you are a member or not.

Lost and Found: No one called about the three outdoor cushions on the back lawn of a house on Sherman. If they are yours, claim them by calling 610-322-3230 and describing them.

The SIA will be selling raffle tickets and accepting dues payments at the Post Office this Saturday morning.
First prize in the raffle will be the Centennial Cruiser - second prize two tickets to the Phils - Nationals game August 24. Tickets are just $2.00 each or three for $5.00. All for a great cause - Improving Strathmere (but how can you improve on perfection?).

Stop and see us!

The Centennial Tee Shirts are not quite ready yet.

The Schiavo Library will be holding their Used Book Sale beginning tomorrow, May 25 until June 9. Donations have been coming in all winter and they now have hundreds of books for the sale. Stop in (Tuesdays through Saturdays) – it will definitely be worth it!

SIA Meeting Schedule - All Are Welcome: We will be meeting at the Firehouse at 8:00 pm on the second Friday of each month; June 8, July 13, August 10 and September 14. The June meeting will once again be a popular "Welcome Back" wine and cheese party!

The Strathmere Improvement Association includes all owners in Strathmere and Whale Beach and many visitors. It was founded over 60 years ago as a community organization with the simple objective of making Strathmere a better place. We are proud of the organization's many accomplishments over the years.
The SIA is keeping the annual dues at $10 per adult family member. The dues and the fund raisers provide for the Fourth of July Parade and our share of the Christmas Party. We have also donated money to help pay for extra State Police protection.

NOTE: Since most of you never formally "signed up" as members, obviously we cannot "force" you to pay dues, which are really more like (non-deductible) donations anyway.

If you don't pay, we will still keep you on our newsletter distribution. The only penalty will be that you can't vote in our (mostly uncontested) elections!

Nevertheless, we really hope you see enough value in our projects and enjoy the newsletters enough so that you'll contribute $10 per adult family member. Thanks!

Please send dues payments to SIA at PO Box 57, Strathmere, NJ 08248. Remember to tell us your correct e-mail address!
If you have adult children or relatives (or visitors) who visit Strathmere, please forward this message to them - perhaps they'd like to receive these newsletters also.

Also, please let us know if you have comments or suggestions for the newsletter or for SIA in general, or if you'd like us to change your e-mail address in our records.

You can contact us by responding to this e-mail at sia6@comcast.net  or by mailing SIA at PO Box 57.

SIA Newsletter 5 15 2012 - Police Ride; Bridge; Fishing Tourneys; Found; Union Rags; Book Sale; SIA Stuff; Calendar

To All Strathmere and Whale Beach Homeowners and Visitors,

This is National Police Week, and today is Peace Officers' Memorial Day, as established by President John F. Kennedy in 1962.
The Police Unity Tour was organized in 1997 to bring public awareness of Police Officers who have died in the line of duty and to honor their sacrifices, with the secondary goal of raising funds for the National Law Enforcement Officer's Memorial and Museum.
This year more than 1,000 bicycle-riding law enforcement officers and supporters made their 300+ mile bike ride from Liberty State Park in New Jersey and Virginia Beach, Virginia, to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, DC.

On Thursday, May 10, a large group of these riders came through Strathmere.

Good News - the replacement of the bridge railings is complete, and they look great.
Bad News - bridge tolls resume this Friday, May 18.

Saturday, May 5 marked the opening of this year's summer flounder season. Results of the annual Herb Hollinger, Sr. Opening Day Tournament may be seen here.

This Friday and Saturday, the SFEC is sponsoring a Benefit Surf Fishing Tournament.
Donations will go to the Coffey Children Education Fund. Joe Coffey was tragically killed in an auto accident on April 9, leaving his wife and five children. Even if you aren't a member of the SFEC, stop at the Firehouse this Saturday at 6:00 pm for food and drink and make a generous contribution for this cause. Desserts and salads are also welcome...

Lost and Found: In this case, found - three outdoor cushions on the back lawn of a house on Sherman. They were probably blown from a porch on Sherman or Sumner. If they are yours, claim them by calling 610-322-3230 and describing them (no fair looking at the picture while you're describing them!).

Dick Omrod forwarded a note about Strathmere's Ed Tettemer in the Citizens' (CFSWB) Newsletter. Ed has written and directed a documentary about a horse named Union Rags, who was one of the Kentucky Derby favorites. The movie got rave reviews and would probably have been aired by NBC if the horse had won the Derby. Unfortunately, he got bumped hard coming out of the gate and finished a disappointing seventh. It is now expected that he will return to run in the Belmont.
You can watch the entire 24-minute film here. We recommend you click on "full screen" in the lower right corner...

SIA Newsletter 5 4 2012 - Flounder Season; Full Moon - High Tides? Restaurants; Star Trails; SIA Cruiser Raffle; SIA Meetings, Dues and Facebook

To All Strathmere and Whale Beach Homeowners and Visitors,

Flounder Season opens on Saturday! Both Whale Creek Marina and Frank's Boats are ready for action. The SFEC will be holding the annual Herb Hollinger, Sr. Opening Day Tournament.

Here is Frank bringing his convoy of boats up the bay on Monday:

You may have seen in the news that the full moon Saturday night will be a "super-moon". The moon will be at its closest to the earth for the year 2012. Not only will this make for a great view of the rising moon Saturday evening (assuming a clear sky), but it will also bring the highest predicted tides of the year. Predictions are as follows:
Friday 7:22 pm 5.1 feet
Saturday 8:12 pm 5.3 feet
Sunday 9:03 pm 5.5 feet
Monday 9:55 pm 5.4 feet

While these are very high "predicted" tides, they are of concern only if they fall in conjunction with a sustained period of northeast wind, generating flood tides. Pay attention to that if you park on Bayview Drive over the next few days!

The Deauville Inn is now open seven days a week; Mildred's and La Fontana have been open weekends for awhile; Twisties and Uncle Bill's will be opening Mothers' Day Weekend. The Old Shack will be opening tomorrow, and then will open Saturdays and Sundays until full time on June 8th.

Jimmy Callahan forwarded to us this great time lapse shot of "Star Trails" over Strathmere. Learn more about the picture and photographer here.

As you learned in Linda Bateman's letter yesterday, the Strathmere Improvement Association will be chancing off a really neat "Centennial Cruiser" bicycle this summer. Here is a sneak peek at this beauty:

More to come on this raffle...

We have a great schedule of SIA meetings this summer. Meetings are held at 8:00 pm on the second Friday of June, July, August and September. Much more to come on this also.

We will be holding our annual SIA Community Yard Sale at the Firehouse on Saturday morning, June 30. Put it on your calendar and come browse the many treasures your neighbors have to offer.
