SIA Newsletter 5 15 2012 - Police Ride; Bridge; Fishing Tourneys; Found; Union Rags; Book Sale; SIA Stuff; Calendar

To All Strathmere and Whale Beach Homeowners and Visitors,

This is National Police Week, and today is Peace Officers' Memorial Day, as established by President John F. Kennedy in 1962.
The Police Unity Tour was organized in 1997 to bring public awareness of Police Officers who have died in the line of duty and to honor their sacrifices, with the secondary goal of raising funds for the National Law Enforcement Officer's Memorial and Museum.
This year more than 1,000 bicycle-riding law enforcement officers and supporters made their 300+ mile bike ride from Liberty State Park in New Jersey and Virginia Beach, Virginia, to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, DC.

On Thursday, May 10, a large group of these riders came through Strathmere.

Good News - the replacement of the bridge railings is complete, and they look great.
Bad News - bridge tolls resume this Friday, May 18.

Saturday, May 5 marked the opening of this year's summer flounder season. Results of the annual Herb Hollinger, Sr. Opening Day Tournament may be seen here.

This Friday and Saturday, the SFEC is sponsoring a Benefit Surf Fishing Tournament.
Donations will go to the Coffey Children Education Fund. Joe Coffey was tragically killed in an auto accident on April 9, leaving his wife and five children. Even if you aren't a member of the SFEC, stop at the Firehouse this Saturday at 6:00 pm for food and drink and make a generous contribution for this cause. Desserts and salads are also welcome...

Lost and Found: In this case, found - three outdoor cushions on the back lawn of a house on Sherman. They were probably blown from a porch on Sherman or Sumner. If they are yours, claim them by calling 610-322-3230 and describing them (no fair looking at the picture while you're describing them!).

Dick Omrod forwarded a note about Strathmere's Ed Tettemer in the Citizens' (CFSWB) Newsletter. Ed has written and directed a documentary about a horse named Union Rags, who was one of the Kentucky Derby favorites. The movie got rave reviews and would probably have been aired by NBC if the horse had won the Derby. Unfortunately, he got bumped hard coming out of the gate and finished a disappointing seventh. It is now expected that he will return to run in the Belmont.
You can watch the entire 24-minute film here. We recommend you click on "full screen" in the lower right corner...

The Schiavo Library will be holding their Used Book Sale May 25 - June 9. Donations have been coming in all winter and they now have hundreds of books for the sale. Stop in – it will definitely be worth it.

SIA Meeting Schedule - All Are Welcome: We will be meeting at the Firehouse at 8:00 pm on the second Friday of each month; June 8, July 13, August 10 and September 14. The June meeting will once again be a wine and cheese tasting event!

The Strathmere Improvement Association includes all owners in Strathmere and Whale Beach and many visitors. It was founded over 60 years ago as a community organization with the simple objective of making Strathmere a better place. We are proud of the organization's many accomplishments over the years.

The SIA Board has voted to keep the annual dues at $10 per adult family member. The dues and the fund raisers provide for the Fourth of July Parade and our share of the Christmas Party. We have also donated money to help pay for extra State Police protection.

Please send dues payments to SIA at PO Box 57, Strathmere, NJ 08248. Remember to tell us your correct e-mail address!

If you have adult children or relatives (or visitors) who visit Strathmere, please forward this message to them - perhaps they'd like to receive these newsletters also.

Also, please let us know if you have comments or suggestions for the newsletter or for SIA in general, or if you'd like us to change your e-mail address in our records.
You can contact us by responding to this e-mail at sia6@comcast.net  or by mailing SIA at PO Box 57.
