SIA Newsletter 10/21/11 - High Tides Next Week; SFEC Environmental Weekend Pictures

To All Strathmere and Whale Beach Homeowners and Visitors,
This is a "heads-up" to those of you with property on Bayview Drive or anywhere else in town subject to tidal flooding. The moon and sun will align next week to give us very high morning tides, so please take precautions accordingly.

Mon 10/24 6:08 am 4.7 ft
Tue 10/25 6:58 am 5.0 ft
Wed 10/26 7:48 am 5.4 ft
Thur 10/27 8:37 am 5.5 ft
Fri 10/28 9:28 am 5.5 ft
Sat 10/29 10:19 am 5.4 ft
Sun 10/30 11:13 am 5.1 ft
Mon 10/31 12:10 pm 4.8 ft

When we get a 5.0 foot tide, we have pretty high water in some parts of Bayview. With another five or six inches, we'll have a lot of water - and this is without any wind effects! If we should have a northeast wind for one or more of these days, it could get scary. Be prepared!

The Strathmere Fishing & Environmental Club (SFEC) designates October as their Environmental Month, and they hold special programs to provide education on and help for the environment. On Saturday, October 8, they sponsored a dune grass planting event in the morning and a presentation on ospreys in the afternoon. Both were very well attended, including many SIA members.
Here's a picture of folks having fun (really!) planting some 2500 dune grass seedlings:

Many more pictures of the dune grass planting are available on the SFEC website -  http://www.strathmerefishing.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=166:dune2011&catid=3:meetings

That afternoon, Ben Wurtz of the Conserve Wildlife Foundation of NJ gave a fascinating presentation at the Firehouse on "The Osprey Project"

Again, many more pictures of the presentation may be found on the SFEC website here - http://www.strathmerefishing.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=167:osprey&catid=3:meetings

Our thanks to the SFEC for these outstanding events, and especially to Carol Ferguson and Dick Omrod, who took care of organizing them!
