SIA Newsletter 7 21 2014 - Bay Races Tonight; Turtles; SIA Activities; Suncatcher; Emergency Declaration; Segways; Kayak Festival; Dog Waste; Updated Calendar; SIA Dues

To All Strathmere and Whale Beach Homeowners and Visitors,

Tonight is another big Strathmere event: Lifeboat and Paddle Races on the Bay starting at the Deauville at 6:00 pm.
This is always a fun event to watch – from Twisties, the Deauville, the playground, or any street end.
All donations / profits go to the MS Society.

Last Thursday was Turtle Night at the Schiavo Library and the boat ramp!

It was sponsored by the Strathmere Fishing and Environmental Club, and there are over 40 pictures of the event on their website here.

Our SIA Family Beach Party on Saturday, August 2 at 7:30 will again feature children’s games and singer Jim Maher (for music lovers of all ages). Rain date is August 9.
Last year, folks brought their chairs and coolers, and  relaxed and enjoyed the music mixed with the sounds of the waves and gulls. Kids participated in fun games and as it got darker, went in search of ghost crabs.
A great way to spend a summer evening as the sun goes down in Strathmere. Bring a friend and meet some new ones too.

The SIA August Meeting will be August 8 at 8:00 pm and feature local artists and photographers.

We will also hold elections that night. Contact Bob Roland, Chairman of the Nominating Committee, to nominate someone (or yourself) by replying to this newsletter.

The SIA’s fund raiser this year is a $5.00 suncatcher / tree ornament with a picture, taken by Ted Kingston, of Strathmere’s snowy owl.

If you’d like one (or more - great for Christmas presents), call Linda at 609-970-0157 or email her at lcbateman@comcast.net.

Last Monday, the Township Committee declared an emergency for Strathmere’s north end, allowing a contractor to truck in sand if needed without going out for bids.

The story is in the Upper Township Gazette here.

The SFEC held tournaments in June, and coverage can be seen on their website.

We don’t do advertisements in the newsletter, but we recently took a few hours to ride Segways from the Somers Mansion in Somers Point across the new bridge and causeway to the Ocean City Hospitality Center and back. A great, fun ride (training included). Highly recommended! Call 609-432-3176.

Mark your calendars for the UTBP Kayak and Stand Up Paddle (SUP) Board Festival on Saturday, August 16th.
It will begin with a 5K Run / 1 Mile Health Walk at 8:00 am.
The Ocean Kayak / Stand Up Paddle preliminary races begin at 11:15 am and the finals should conclude around 3:00 pm.
More details as we get closer to the date.

We hate to have to bring this up, and we doubt our newsletter readers are guilty, but we saw it again this morning so here goes:
Please clean up your dog’s waste!
It doesn’t matter if it’s a vacant lot – those are used by other folks’ dogs.
Don’t force someone else to do what you should have done.
Thanks for being a responsible dog owner.

The Strathmere Improvement Association invites all owners, renters and vacationers in Strathmere and Whale Beach to join as dues paying members. The SIA was founded in 1951 as a community organization with the simple objective of making Strathmere a better place. We work to preserve our town’s “hometown feeling” and to keep lines of communication open within town, and with local government.

We are proud of the organization's many accomplishments over the years, including sponsorship of 2012 Centennial activities, taking on a key organizing and leadership role in Strathmere and Whale Beach relief efforts after Sandy, and hosting an annual community beach party and concert. Additionally, the July and August SIA meetings feature programs of interest to vacationers and homeowners.

Your dues allow us to continue to co-sponsor the Christmas Party and the Fourth of July Parade, as well as the above mentioned activities.

Once again, we are keeping annual dues to $10 per adult family member. When it’s time to vote, SIA by-laws say your dues must be paid in order to cast a vote. We thank you for your support.
Please send your dues payments to SIA at PO Box 57, Strathmere, NJ 08248. Remember to tell us your correct e-mail address!

Also, please let us know if you have comments or suggestions for the newsletter or for SIA in general, or if you'd like us to change your e-mail address in our records.
You can contact us by responding to this e-mail at sia6@comcast.net or strathmere1912@gmail.com, or by mailing SIA at PO Box 57.
