Obituary for DeEtta Schroder

Schroder, DeEtta A., a 52 year resident of Strathmere, NJ peacefully passed away on Thursday, March 13, 2014 at the age of 94. DeEtta was born January 22, 1920 in Edgerton, Ohio.
DeEtta married Commander Henry “Max” Schroder, a WW2 pilot. They were married for 56 years and moved many times before he retired from the Navy and they settled in Strathmere. In 1962 they purchased a trailer park in Strathmere, NJ. DeEtta would recall how they purchased the trailer park and three months later the massive hurricane of 1962 hit. Despite this adversity, Dee & Max moved forward and built a very successful trailer park, which they ran until their retirement in 1990.
DeEtta was a very prominent business woman, but she was most proud of her family and could always be depended on for advice and assistance. Her family and friends remember many wonderful “endless” summers in Strathmere and winters in Puerto Rico, with Dee always at the heart of the event. Her lavish Christmas and Thanksgiving family dinners will always be treasured.
DeEtta was a “Blackjack Star” and spent many a happy day with her sister Madilyn at the casinos, where they were known as “the Strathmere Sisters”. She loved playing cards and taught her entire family her blackjack skills.
She is survived by Daughter, Parri Sue Perry and Son, James Schroder; four grandchildren, Leah Perry (Michael Burkhardt), Jessica (Bill) Egner, Brittney (Bob DelMonico ) Schroder and Ashley (Derek) Southard; five great grandchildren (with number 6 due in May), Brandon, Kaitlyn, Cole, Justin, Kyler. She is also survived by two sisters, Madilyn Uliase and Jacquline Daniels and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, DeEtta was preceded in death by her sisters, Bernice and Irene, and brother, Kenny.
The family will received friends from 9AM to 10AM, Tuesday, March 18th at St. Joseph’s Church, 43rd and Landis Avenue, Sea Isle City, NJ with a mass of Christian Burial to follow at 10AM. Burial will be in the Cape May County Veteran’s Cemetery, Cape May Court House.

Blandine Schilling, formerly of 'Ernie's Corner' in Strathmere passes away at 105 years old.

Blandine Liagre Schilling, age 105, formerly of Lansdowne, passed away peacefully on February 21st. Her beloved husband Ernest predeceased her in 1991. Surviving are her children Claudette Leyden, Ernest Schilling, Gerard Schilling, Erick Schilling, Susan Boyd, Lorraine Lunney, Paul Schilling, eighteen grandchildren and twenty great grandchildren.


Blandine emigrated from France at the age of 19. While studying English at Frankford HS she met her future husband Ernest, who emigrated from Germany. They were devout Catholics and active members of St. Philomena Roman Catholic Church in Lansdowne. They owned the Fernwood Diner in East Lansdowne.
For the past 17 years Blandine resided in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. A Funeral Mass will be held at Saint John Chrysostom Church in Wallingford at 11 AM on March1st. Interment will be at SS. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Springfield.

Harriet Reardon Bailey’s Dream
In December we hosted a wonderful display of some of Harriet’s "treasures." It was just a tantalizing fraction of the collection that Harriet and her family have lovingly saved through the years. Her goal is to build the "Endicott-Reardon Museum" (on the mainland in Upper Township) to highlight family life at the shore. Through artifacts and photos, it will tell the story of two families that came to Cape May County in the early 1900s.
Just as Rita C. Schiavo’s vision of a local library became a reality, we wish Harriet success in her creation of a local museum. We’ll keep you posted.

Oscar Winners:
Again this year, we will purchase DVDs of the 2014 Oscar winning movies as they become available. So if you didn’t see them on the BIG screen, you can find them for rent here in the Schiavo Library this spring.

The Strathmere Festival Orchestra will present an all-Mozart concert at 8:00 p.m. on Friday, February 28, at the Church of Saint Joseph in Greenwich Village, New York City. The orchestra will perform the Symphony No. 38, Serenade No. 6 K. 239 (“Serenata Notturna”) and two popular flute compositions, the Andante for Flute & Orchestra K. 315 and the Flute Concerto No. 1 K. 313 featuring soloist Barry Crawford.

 

Barry Crawford is principal flute for the Strathmere Festival Orchestra and the Jupiter Symphony Chamber Players in New York City. Much in demand as a soloist, Mr. Crawford is currently touring with the Brandenburg Ensemble, performing Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 4. He is a member of Poetica Musica, Chamberosity, and Ensemble Pi and has soloed with the American Ballet Theater and the Riverside Symphony. He has been a guest soloist at some of the world’s leading concert halls including Boston Symphony Hall, Kimmel Center in Philadelphia, Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco and the Chicago’s Symphony Center. He appears regularly at internationally recognized music festivals including Lincoln Center’s Mostly Mozart Festival and the Spoleto Festival in Italy.

 

The concert will also feature guest conductor Michael Feldman, best known as one of the founders of the Orchestra of St. Luke’s where he serves as administrator and occasional conductor.

 

Comprised of more than 30 professional musicians from the metropolitan region, the Strathmere Festival Orchestra is under the direction of Music Director Per Brevig, a Norwegian born musician who was the principal trombonist with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. Maestro Brevig is affiliated with the Aspen Music Festival, Julliard, Manhattan and Mannes Schools of Music, and with the Manchester Symphony Orchestra. He is the founder of the Edvard Grieg Society and is the recipient of numerous awards and prizes.

SIA Newsletter 2 12 2014 - Fire Commission Elections Saturday; Trash & Recycling Tuesday; Owl; Pax; Revaluation Coming; SVFC Laptops; Like Us!

To All Strathmere and Whale Beach Homeowners and Visitors,

This Saturday, Fire Commission Elections will be held at the Firehouse from 2:00 to 9:00.

You’ll be asked to vote for one commissioner (Randy Roash is running unopposed) and whether or not to approve the 2014 budget adopted by the Commission.

There will be no trash collection Monday because of Presidents’ Day; it will be collected on Tuesday.
Officially, recycling won’t be collected until the following Monday.

Unofficially, the Township Public Works folks send out a recycling truck for commercial businesses after a Monday holiday and ask the truck to run through Strathmere for the recycling at this (slow) time of year. It doesn’t take long to pick up our recycling and still have time to do the businesses.

So, we can’t guarantee it, but if you put out recycling with your trash on Tuesday, it will likely be collected.

The official trash and recycling information is on the Township’s website, here.

Strathmere is treated differently for Bulk Trash (furniture, etc. but not construction materials). The Township picks up our bulk trash on every regular trash collection day (usually Monday).
The exception to this is that metal, electronics and mixed ridged plastics will only be picked up on the first Wednesday of each month, but must be called in (609-628-2011 ext. 352) by the previous Friday.

As we write this, winter storm Pax (actually not so peaceful) is working its way across the south and will head up the coast toward us tonight.

Considerable snow is forecast for the Philadelphia and New York areas, but it is expected to be mostly a rain event in Strathmere, with perhaps a little snow at the beginning and end of the storm. We are expecting minor tidal flooding, however, so Bayview should be impassable tomorrow morning and perhaps again at the evening high tide.

Upper Township will begin a property revaluation this spring, with inspections set to start as early as April.

 Here is the story in the Upper Township Gazette.

The Fire Commission budget, at the link above, shows in the top line that the assessed valuation of Strathmere properties has fallen $60 million (15%) in the past five years.

Since there has been no township-wide revaluation during that time, this decrease is due almost entirely to tax appeals.

Thanks to Deputy Chief Ed Scanlon, the SVFC will receive two Panasonic Toughbook laptop computers from the New Jersey American Water Company.

The laptops will allow our firefighters to access property and other information while on their way to a call, enhancing safety and effectiveness. Story here.
