SIA Newsletter 7 10 2012 - SIA '62 Storm Meeting Friday; Schiavo / SFEC Programs Tonight, Thursday and Saturday; OOPS; Flounder Tourney Results; SIA Sales; Facebook

To All Strathmere and Whale Beach Homeowners and Visitors, This is a week just full of things to do in the evenings in Strathmere!

Since this is a Strathmere Improvement Association Newsletter, naturally we'll talk about our 8:00 pm meeting on Friday first!
Our speaker Friday is Dr. Joe LaRosa, who wrote the book, Our Perfect Storm, about the March, 1962 northeaster that lasted through five high tides, getting worse and worse with each one.

Joe was a boy of 9 when the storm hit, and he's written the book from his memories, from interviews of others who lived through it and with information from the Sea Isle City Historical Society.
Joe will talk about the storm, then take questions, and then invite anyone in the audience to speak of their memories of the storm.
It will be informative and fun - don't miss it!

This evening, Tuesday, at 7:00 pm, is the first of three programs sponsored jointly by the Strathmere Fishing and Environmental Club and the Schiavo Library.

Tonight's program at the library features a speaker from the Wetlands Institute of Stone Harbor who will talk about terrapins. The Wetlands presentations have been extremely popular in previous years (see picture below).
Following the presentation, children will be permitted to release terrapins at the boat ramp.
Don't let your children or grandchildren miss this!

**There will be a second program at the library on Thursday evening, again at 7:00 pm, this time featuring the Marine Mammal Streanding Center of Brigantine. They will discuss mammals that wash ashore on New Jersey beaches.
On Saturday at 7:00 pm, a third program will be held at the firehouse, with a discussion on Osprey by the Conserve Wildlife Foundation of New Jersey.
There is no charge for these programs, but donations are encouraged.
**OOPS! Our apologies to Pete and Susan Prinsen and their daughter Maxi, for spelling their names incorrectly in yesterday's Part 2 newsletter. Dementia is a terrible thing!

**The SFEC Annual Flounder Tournament was held Saturday, June 30. Results here.

**The Citizens for Strathmere and Whale Beach group are very much in need of donations now for their July 21 Auction. New items only! If you have something to donate, please call, text or email Lynn Fayter today at 425-5655 or jfayter@comcast.net

Tee shirts and bike raffle tickets may be purchased at 212 Bayview Drive. Call 263-6846 first in case we're out... Adult shirts are $15; youth sizes are $10. Unfortunately, we no longer have adult large or medium sizes.

First prize in the raffle (drawing August 10) will be our Centennial Cruiser and second prize will be two tickets to the Phils - Nationals game August 24. Tickets are just $2.00 each or three for $5.00.

The Schiavo Library has a beautiful new scrapbook detailing the library’s first three years. Stop in and see it!
Somehow in yesterday's newsletters we missed posting this shot of the Fire Company decorating the Centennial Banner for the parade. Thanks, guys!!

The Strathmere Improvement Association includes all owners in Strathmere and Whale Beach and many visitors. It was founded over 60 years ago as a community organization with the simple objective of making Strathmere a better place. We are proud of the organization's many accomplishments over the years.
The SIA is keeping the annual dues at $10 per adult family member. The dues and the fund raisers provide for the Fourth of July Parade and our share of the Christmas Party. We have also donated money to help pay for extra State Police protection.
NOTE: Since most of you never formally "signed up" as members, obviously we cannot "force" you to pay dues, which are really more like (non-deductible) donations anyway.
If you don't pay, we will still keep you on our newsletter distribution. The only penalty will be that you can't vote in our (mostly uncontested) elections!
Nevertheless, we really hope you see enough value in our projects and enjoy the newsletters enough so that you'll contribute $10 per adult family member. Thanks!
Please send dues payments to SIA at PO Box 57, Strathmere, NJ 08248. Remember to tell us your correct e-mail address!

Also, please let us know if you have comments or suggestions for the newsletter or for SIA in general, or if you'd like us to change your e-mail address in our records.
You can contact us by responding to this e-mail at sia6@comcast.net  or by mailing SIA at PO Box 57.
