Schiavo Library: June 2013 Newsletter

Fourth Anniversary of the Schiavo Library
Yes, it’s been four years since this special library opened its doors. We’ve had so many wonderful patrons and visitors. When I looked through our records, I found out that we had 9305 people visit during the first three years 2009 – 2012. So, we are looking for our 10,000 visitor sometime this month or early July. It probably won’t occur before our actual anniversary date of June 26, but we’re on the lookout for that magic number.  Stop in – you could be visitor #10,000 and win a gift certificate to Mildred’s Restaurant. We’ll also have cupcakes the week of our anniversary.

 General Slocum Memorial
A memorial service will take place on the beach behind the library on June 15, 2013 at 10:00am to remember the more than 1,000 victims of a fire aboard the General Slocum on June 15, 1904 in the New York Harbor. A sign has been installed at the sidewalk in front of the library to mark the location of the sinking of the hulk of the General Slocum barge in 1911.

Used Book Sale
Our fourth annual “Welcome Summer” Used Book Sale is just winding down. We’ve sold lots of books, DVDs, magazines, CDs, etc. We have such great prices that most customers are surprised how little they are actually spending. Total profit numbers are not available yet. I’ll let everyone know in the next newsletter.

 Summer Programs
Get ready for a busy summer. Here’s a sneak preview of our programs that begin the week of July 2:
