SIA Newsletter 9 26 2013 - Town Meeting This Saturday on New FEMA Maps; Bayberry and Beach Plum Planting 10/12; Reef Tourney Results; Webcam; Like Us on Facebook!; Calendar

To All Strathmere and Whale Beach Homeowners and Visitors,

Paul Dietrich, Upper Township Engineer, will lead a Strathmere Town Meeting at 4:30 this Saturday, September 28 at the Firehouse to discuss the new FEMA maps and what they mean to us. He will have paper copies of the maps.

The meeting is sponsored by the Strathmere Improvement Association.

Paul will also discuss the new trash and recycling collection procedures coming in 2014, talk about our next beach replenishment, and answer other questions regarding Township issues.
If you bring an elevation certificate for your house, following the meeting Paul will work individually with you if you'd like clarification on how much you would have to raise your house to be in compliance with the new base flood elevation and Township ordinances and to reduce flood insurance premiums. Remember, unless you are rebuilding or doing major remodeling, you do not have to raise your house.
Again, as we announced last month, it looks like almost all of Strathmere and Whale Beach dodged the bullet and ended up in the "A" (AE) Zones instead of the "V" Zone.
Prior to the meeting, you may want to review the new maps here:

After you zoom in to Strathmere on the map, click on "Basemap", then "Imagery" to see your house and the flood zone boundaries.

Beach Plums & Bayberry bushes at 10 am at Randolph Road and the beach (rain date October 13 at noon).

Please bring a shovel and gloves if you can.

In addition, the SFEC requests all to join them for a special presentation by the
American Littoral Society that afternoon at 4 PM at the Firehouse.

Refreshments will be served following the discussion.

The Strathmere Improvement Association includes all owners in Strathmere and Whale Beach and many visitors. It was founded in 1951 as a community organization with the simple objective of making Strathmere a better place. We are proud of the organization's many accomplishments over the years.

The SIA is keeping the annual dues at $10 per adult family member. The dues and the fund raisers provide for the Fourth of July Parade and our share of the Christmas Party. We conducted a number of Centennial events last year, and also donated money to help pay for extra State Police protection, and to residents affected by Sandy.

NOTE: Since most of you never formally "signed up" as members, obviously we cannot "force" you to pay dues,
which are really more like (non-deductible) donations anyway.

If you don't pay, we will still keep you on our newsletter distribution. The only penalty will be that you can't vote in our (mostly uncontested) elections!

Nevertheless, we really hope you see value in our projects and enjoy the newsletters enough so that you'll contribute $10 per adult family member.

Thanks!

Dues payments may be sent to SIA at PO Box 57, Strathmere, NJ 08248. Remember to tell us your correct e-mail address!

Also, please let us know if you have comments or suggestions for the newsletter or for SIA in general, or if you'd like us to change your e-mail address in our records.

You can contact us by responding to this e-mail at sia6@comcast.net  by mailing SIA at PO Box 57.

Thanks very much for your continuing support of the Strathmere Improvement Association!

To All Strathmere and Whale Beach Homeowners and Visitors,

Town Meeting on New "Preliminary" FEMA Maps Saturday, September 28:  As we announced last month, it looks like almost all of Strathmere and Whale Beach dodged the bullet and ended up in the "A" (AE) Zones instead of the dreaded "V" Zone.

After you zoom in to Strathmere on the map, click on "Basemap", then "Imagery" to see your house.
Paul Dietrich, Upper Township Engineer, will hold a Strathmere Town Meeting at 4:30, Saturday, September 28 at the Firehouse to discuss the new maps and what they mean to us. The meeting is sponsored jointly by the SIA and the CFSWB.
Paul will also discuss the new trash and recycling collection procedures coming in 2014.
Paul will work individually with homeowners wanting clarification on whether to raise a home and by how much...

Schiavo Library Used Book Sale:

The Library's used book sale continues through this Saturday, September 21. Let’s continue to make this a big fundraiser – come out and buy lots of great books!

Nice story here in the Press of AC on the Library and the booksale (pictures of Joanie and Christine).

****************************************

Also on Saturday will be the SFEC's Reef Tournament. More details here.

The SFEC is sponsoring a Bayberry and Beach Plum "planting event" for Strathmere on Saturday, October 12.
Please plan to spend part of that long weekend doing something for the Strathmere environment. More details to follow.
That same day, at 4:00pm, the SFEC will hold their annual Environmental Presentation (open to all) following their regular meeting.

********************************************************

The SFEC Kids' Surf Tournament was held on the Saturday of Labor Day Weekend.
It was a huge success, with 194 kids registered for the 10th Annual Kids' Fishing Tournament.
Thanks to My Wife's Rod and Reel Repair Shop and donations "In Memory of Olley Twist", the kids all received a free tee shirt.
Also, thanks to sponsors, there were also free bloodworms, fishing rigs and sinkers for all 194 kids, and various prizes awarded.

The fishing winners were as follows;

Olivia Nickel, age 5, bluefish 13.5";
Matt Pisacane, age 13, kingfish 12";
Max Cogan age 12, kingfish 12".

********************************************************

Jimmy Callahan was just past the age limit for the Surf Tournament above, but check out this 259 pound bigeye tuna he caught on August 26!

He says he's caught much heavier fish, but this is the strongest fish he ever fought.

One hour and 10 minutes on 50 lb. tackle.

*****************************************************
On September 7, we were treated to the sight of a Sandbar Wedding!
Angelo and Cathy Dunkerley tied the knot across the bay...

And then headed back to Twisties to celebrate!

Again, please remember the story of Derek Schall, nephew of Stephanie (Schall) Muller, who runs the Old Shack.
Derek needs our help, and hopefully you read his story and will pitch in (to the Derek Albert Schall Fund at Wells Fargo Bank, 250 Blair Mill Road, Horsham, PA 19044).

***********************************
And a repeated request - please don't dump anything on the dunes!

There is an "urban legend" (seashore legend?) that dumping Christmas trees and/or brush on the dunes will catch sand, thus building the dunes up and providing more protection from ocean storms. This, like many legends, has proven to be false.

Dumping on the dunes kills the natural dune grass and vegetation, and hurts much more than it helps.
In a sandy dune system, that decomposing vegetative material prevents beach grass and other "good" dune vegetation from growing properly.
The Township Engineer tells us it is prohibited under a Township Ordinance and is considered littering (Sec 24-4.1b) and is punishable with a fine of $500 - $1000.

Schiavo Library: September 2013 Newsletter

Schiavo Library: September 2013 Newsletter

End of Summer Used Book Sale: The dates are September 6 – 22, 2013. We’ve received lots of donations all summer. So, there’s a great selection of books and other media. Join us between 10 and 4 Tuesday through Saturday.

Mahjong: The group is still going strong. If interested, please call the library (609) 486-6265 or email us at info@strathmerelibrary.org  - Give it a try – it looks like fun and challenging, too!

September = Amnesty Month: Procrastinators - bring in those overdue books – no fines in September.

Summer Wrap-up: It was a great summer for library usage and programs. Numbers were up – and so was circulation. Our DVDs were especially popular. And people are still reading the traditional book – especially in the summer and on vacation.

Here are some photos from our summer programs:
