The Strathmere Improvement Association includes all owners in Strathmere and Whale Beach and many visitors. It was founded over 60 years ago as a community organization with the simple objective of making Strathmere a better place. We are proud of the organization's many accomplishments over the years.
The SIA is keeping the annual dues at $10 per adult family member. The dues and the fund raisers provide for the Fourth of July Parade and our share of the Christmas Party. We have also donated money to help pay for extra State Police protection.
NOTE: Since most of you never formally "signed up" as members, obviously we cannot "force" you to pay dues, which are really more like (non-deductible) donations anyway.
If you don't pay, we will still keep you on our newsletter distribution. The only penalty will be that you can't vote in our (mostly uncontested) elections! Nevertheless, we really hope you see enough value in our projects and enjoy the newsletters enough so that you'll contribute $10 per adult family member. Thanks!
Please send dues payments to SIA at PO Box 57, Strathmere, NJ 08248. Remember to tell us your correct e-mail address!
Also, please let us know if you have comments or suggestions for the newsletter or for SIA in general, or if you'd like us to change your e-mail address in our records.

You can contact us by responding to this e-mail at sia6@comcast.net  or by mailing SIA at PO Box 57.

Environmental Week in Strathmere

The Environmental Week

The Rita Schiavo Memorial Library and The Strathmere Fishing & Environmental Club have joined to sponsor a series of lectures on some of the marvelous creatures that share our barrier island.

On Tuesday, July 10th at 7:00 PM, at the Schiavo Library
The Wetland’s Institute will tell you all you need to know about the Diamond Back Terrapin, their habits and habitat. Find out why they insist on crossing our busy highways. As part of the presentation youngsters will release incubated terrapins into the Strathmere Bay

On Thursday, July 12th, 7:00 PM at the Schiavo Library
The Marine Mammal Stranding Center will give a presentation on their activities, how they go about rescuing sick and injured marine life. Learn how you can help the Stranding Center in their work protecting animals

On Saturday, July 14th, 7:00PM at the Firehouse
The Conserve Wildlife Foundation of NJ will educate us about the “fish eagle”, better known as the osprey. Why are there so many, what do they eat, where do they go in the winter. These questions and much more will be answered at this session.

We promise that each of the lectures will be educational and entertaining for both young and old. Everyone is invited, and while there is no charge for attending a generous donation will be greatly appreciated. We ask that children be accompanied with a responsible adult.

Donations will help both organizations to continue their contributions to our Village and the environment. Both the Strathmere Fishing & Environmental Club and the Rita Schiavo Memorial Library are fully tax deductible.

Strathmere postcard available

I had a special postcard made to tie in with the Strathmere Centennial Celebration and the Strathmere Library's “Strathmere is our old hometown at the shore” history notebook project and display. The image is the same one that is available on the Strathmere Improvement Association's Centennial t-shirt, Winthrop road circa 1912.

The postcard is available at either the Strathmere Library or Riordan's office. Limited quantity, while supplies last.

Just added 2 vintage photos to the Strathmere website

Sarah Shivy sent photos of a home in Strathmere that used to belong to her great-grandparents.
Sarah says "Even though our family no longer owns a house in Strathmere, we still visit the beach, the Deauville, and Twisties every summer!  I know I speak for the rest of my family when I saw we love Strathmere!  It will always be a favorite place for us! "

See these and other vintage home photos on this page - http://www.strathmere.net/houses4.html

**Also, I'm going to try to find time to revamp the Strathmere website. Clean it up, re-align and enlarge some photos, replace old scans etc.

To All Strathmere and Whale Beach Homeowners and Visitors,

Our Centennial Banners are up!

The SIA planned and purchased two Centennial Banners, and last Sunday Dick Omrod, Herb Hollinger, Paul Geib and Ed DiMarcantonio erected them, so that they can be seen equally well from each direction. Great job!

**We need to place our order for tables, for our annual SIA Community Yard Sale at the Firehouse from 8:00 am to noon on Saturday morning, June 30.  If you are interested in a table (just $15), now is the time to e-mail Linda at lcbateman@comcast.net  or call Janet Mahley at 856-423-5543 to be sure you have one!

The General Slocum Memorial Service was held on the Strathmere beach on Friday, June 15.
In addition to honoring the 1021 people who lost their lives in that tragedy, the US Coast Guard Auxiliary uses the occasion to promote safe boating - a very big deal here in Strathmere. Pictures of the service can be seen here - http://www.strathmerefishing.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=211:slocum12&catid=3:meetings

**This Thursday, June 21, the Shiavo Library will hold a "Meet the Author" discussion and book signing session with Doreen McGettigan, author of BRISTOL bOYS STOMP, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm.
http://doreenmcgettigan.com/reviews-for-bristol-boyz-stomp/

**The SFEC Annual Flounder Tournament will be held on Saturday, June 30. If you register by this Friday, June 22, you'll get a free tournament tee shirt. Details here - http://www.strathmerefishing.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=209:flounder0612&catid=2:tournaments

Speaking of tee shirts, people seem really delighted with our Centennial tee shirts - they've been selling like crazy! The SIA will continue to sell tee shirts and bike raffle tickets and accept dues payments at the Post Office and/or The Old Shack on weekend mornings.
Adult shirts are $15; youth sizes are $10. We are temporarily out of sizes 3XL and 2XL, but more are on the way!

The back of the shirt was taken from a circa 1912 postcard showing the West Jersey Cottage, Annex, train station and other cottages on what is now West Winthrop.

First prize in the raffle (drawing August 10) will be our Centennial Cruiser and second prize will be two tickets to the Phils - Nationals game August 24. Tickets are just $2.00 each or three for $5.00.

Shirts and raffle tickets may also be purchased at 212 Bayview Drive. Call 263-6846 first...

**The Township has been repainting the yellow no-parking areas and curbs at the street corners in town.
These areas are not reserved for you and your friends! The Fire Company asked that these areas be painted so that they can get the fire trucks around the corners in the event of an emergency.
Please don't park in the yellow-striped areas!

SIA Strathmere Centennial Tee Shirts are now available

For more information contact - sia6@comcast.net

tee shirts may be purchased at 212 Bayview Drive. Call 263-6846 first in case we're out

The back of the shirt features a postcard circa 1912 of Winthrop Road in Strathmere.
The small building in the front-left was the train station. The train came over the bay where the bridge is now and stopped at that station.

The two big buildings were the West Jersey Cottages which were owned and run by the Wittkamp Family,  Gus Wittkamp was also the station manager for the train. The other 3 buildings were private homes.

The main building for the West Jersey Cottage (with the flag) was moved up the road around 1945 and it is now La Fontana. The 4 other homes still stand on Winthrop today.

If you have adult children or relatives (or visitors) who visit Strathmere, please forward this message to them - perhaps they'd like to receive these newsletters also.
Also, please let us know if you have comments or suggestions for the newsletter or for SIA in general, or if you'd like us to change your e-mail address in our records.

You can contact us by responding to this e-mail at sia6@comcast.net  or by mailing SIA at PO Box 57.
