Tis that time of year!  The Plover nesting area has been roped off, and we've been stuck with a rainy, windy couple of days but are looking forward to a beautiful end of the week and weekend.  Unfortunately, spring has brought a bumper crop of ticks, dangerous to both humans and pets. Be sure to take precautions when working in your yard or walking your dog. Do a buddy check!

SFEC Beach Planting and Clean-up Reminder
This Saturday, April 29, from 8-11 am, the Strathmere Fishing and Environmental Club is seeking volunteers to help pick up trash, do some weeding, and plant some native plants at our 17 beach entrances. Meet at the Tecumseh beach entrance for instruction and assignments and wear gloves!

News from the SIA Board:
Lots of planning has been going on for the upcoming season (more dates to follow) and at a recent meeting, the SIA officers reorganized to bring the board to full capacity.  Janice Connell, Member-at-Large, has assumed the vacant Vice Presidency position and Janet Mahley has joined the board as Member-at-Large. Per the SIA by-laws, the Board has the authority to fill a vacant position until the regular election is held over the summer. (Janice had been serving as Member-at-Large.) We thank them both for agreeing to serve.

News from the Township Meeting of 4/10/17: Bridge Toll Stance; No Fee on Bayview Ramp; Jitney Action

SIA President Linda Bateman spoke at the Township Committee meeting Tuesday night and asked the Committee to publicly oppose the proposed County Bridge Commission toll hike (recently postponed until August). The Committee voted to create a resolution voicing opposition to the proposed 66% increase to be voted on at the next Township meeting. Then we asked for a clarification on whether Bayview's boat ramp would have an attendant on duty to collect a fee and the Committee decided it would not be economically feasible to charge. They voted to keep both the Taylor and Bayview Avenue ramps open and free.
Also, Christine Furey of Sumner Avenue, spoke about the jitney and concerns about noise, drunken behavior and litter, while balancing the safety benefits of the service. She also noted that without a police force in town, Strathmere cannot be compared to other towns whose police handle routine nuisance calls. The Committee approved a jitney ordinance that licenses jitneys to operate in Upper Township and acknowledged they were aware of Strathmere residents' concerns. They are developing a plan for where the jitney will stop, and noted they plan to have at least one stop in Whale Beach. Email the Mayor and Committee with your comments or attend the next meeting on April 24, 7:30 pm where the anticipated route and schedule will be announced.

Schiavo Library: April 2017 Newsletter

Schiavo Library: April 2017 Newsletter

National Library Week: April 9-15, 2017
Join us for National Library Week. A great time to celebrate all kinds of libraries. Find a good book and enjoy a cupcake, too.

Looking for a Good Book?
The Perfect Horse by Elizabeth Letts I would recommend this book if you like history, horses and a really good story. It’s about the daring rescue of the famous Lipizzaner horses of Vienna during the final days of World War II.

Spring Mahjong Lessons
Wendy Dougherty has agreed to again give Mahjong lessons here at the library. She will be available on Fridays in April and May between 10:30-12:30. If you are interested, please call the library (609 486-6265). We need your name, phone number and email address so that Wendy can contact you. The lessons will be free for Schiavo Library members and $4 for non-members. Wendy says that beginners should figure on at least two 2-hour lessons to feel comfortable at open games.

Earth Day (April 22) and Recycling
Here at the Schiavo Library, we’re really great at recycling! We constantly recycle books. We’ve been taking in used book donations all winter and our next sale will start right before Memorial Day weekend – May 25 and probably last at least 3 weeks! Save the dates and get your recycled books here!
