SIA Newsletter 8 24 2012 - SIA Meeting, Raffle Winner, Etc.

To All Strathmere and Whale Beach Homeowners and Visitors,

Don't forget that we've rescheduled the Centennial Trolley Rides to September 1 (Saturday of Labor Day Weekend).
Same format as before: Kids' 20-minute Fun Rides at 4:00, 4:20 and 4:40; Adult Historical Rides at 5:00, 6:00 and 7:00.
***************************************************
On August 10, we had a great SIA meeting
First we presented the Bergus Scholarship Awards, in the form of Commemorative Silver Dollars, to our four Strathmere Scholars.

Here are John and Matt Pond, and Christopher ("CJ") and Brian Furey, with their certificates.
Priscilla Bergus Lawrence made the presentation, and spoke of how her parents supported excellence in education...

Next came the drawings for the raffle.
President Linda Bateman held the "jug" while Brian drew the winner of the second place prize, two Phillies tickets donated by Karen Mitchell.

The winner was Tom Scranton!

Then Matt drew the winner of the Centennial Cruiser Bicycle.

The winner was Kim Hartline, of Whittier Road and Collegeville, PA, shown here the next day with husband Brian and her new bike!

We then proceeded with the business meeting. One of the items covered was a proposed change in the Bylaws to reduce the number of General Membership Meetings from four times a year to two. See the attached minutes for the specific wording of the proposed change. This change will be voted on at the SIA Meeting on September 14.

Following the business meeting, Dave Townsend gave a fascinating presentation on the history of the Townsend Family.

Did you know that his family dammed up Mill Creek 'way back in the 1680's, creating Magnolia Lake?
This is the lake on your right after you turn left onto Route 9 from Sea Isle Boulevard...

Dave has an extremely interesting family history,

and held the large crowd spellbound...

An excellent meeting!

Have you paid your SIA Dues for 2012?
The Strathmere Improvement Association includes all owners in Strathmere and Whale Beach and many visitors. It was founded over 60 years ago as a community organization with the simple objective of making Strathmere a better place. We are proud of the organization's many accomplishments over the years.

The annual dues are $10 per adult family member. The dues and the fund raisers provide for the Fourth of July Parade and our share of the Christmas Party. We also donate money to help pay for extra State Police protection. This year we invested in the Centennial Banners and the Historic Trolley Rides...

NOTE: Since most of you never formally "signed up" as members, obviously we cannot "force" you to pay dues, which are really more like (non-deductible) donations anyway.
If you don't pay, we will still keep you on our newsletter distribution. The only penalty will be that you can't vote in our (mostly uncontested) elections!
Nevertheless, we really hope you see enough value in our projects and enjoy the newsletters enough so that you'll contribute $10 per adult family member.
Thanks!

Please send dues payments to SIA at PO Box 57, Strathmere, NJ 08248. Remember to tell us your correct e-mail address!

Also, please let us know if you have comments or suggestions for the newsletter or for SIA in general, or if you'd like us to change your e-mail address in our records.

You can contact us by responding to this e-mail at sia6@comcast.net   or by mailing SIA at PO Box 57.

SIA Newsletter 8 10 2012 - Kayak Festival Tomorrow; SIA Meeting Tonight and Trolley Rides Tomorrow

To All Strathmere and Whale Beach Homeowners and Visitors,
This is a very busy week, and we're trying to do justice to all of the events. Hopefully you aren't tired of reading such a flood of newsletters.
This one is primarily about tomorrow's Kayak Festival, held by the Beach Patrol, but as this is an SIA Newsletter we'll first remind you of the two SIA events.

**************************
Tonight at 8:00pm we will hold our August SIA Meeting at the Firehouse.

We will draw the winner of Centennial Cruiser Bike Raffle!
We will also have nominations and elections of 2013 SIA Officers, and award the Bergus Prizes for Scholarship to our local scholars.
Following the business meeting, our own Dave Townsend will discuss the Townsend Family's hundreds of years of history in Cape May County!
Dave's 10th generation grandfather was John Townsend, who was allegedly the first white settler in Cape May County and built a home in 1690 which still exists.
Several generations of Townsends remained in the county and some made their living on the sea, which resulted in several tragedies involving Dave's ancestors.
You'll enjoy this - rain or no rain!

******************************************************************************
Saturday evening the SIA will be offering Free "Centennial Trolley Tours" around Strathmere.
For the younger folks, at 4:00, 4:20 and 4:40, we will be providing 15-minute fun trolley rides around town, and then
45-minute historic tours of the town at 5:00, 6:00 and 7:00.
The trolley holds 25. Anyone who comes for the 5:00 ride and can't get on will get first priority for their choice of the 6:00 or 7:00 rides.
Come a little early as we need to actually pull away on each hour! Thanks!
*************************************************************************************

Tomorrow, Saturday, August 11, the Beach Patrol will hold their annual Kayak Festival.
At this point it appears that rain could possibly delay the start a bit, but it is now expected that the Festival will go on tomorrow.
It will take place on the Vincent Road beach, and there will be instructions, demonstrations, ocean racing and wave riding
Bring the family! Admission is free, and equipment will be provided free for both instruction and race events.
Registration is also at Vincent - Race competitors pay $20 for entry fee and Festival tee shirt.

The Strathmere Improvement Association includes all owners in Strathmere and Whale Beach and many visitors. It was founded over 60 years ago as a community organization with the simple objective of making Strathmere a better place. We are proud of the organization's many accomplishments over the years.
The SIA is keeping the annual dues at $10 per adult family member. The dues and the fund raisers provide for the Fourth of July Parade and our share of the Christmas Party. We have also donated money to help pay for extra State Police protection.
