SIA Newsletter 7 31 2012 - Centennial Trolley Tour; ; SVFC Safety Day; Library Events; SIA August 10 Meeting; Kayak Festival; Nightmare; SVFC BBQ; Facebook

To All Strathmere and Whale Beach Homeowners and Visitors,

100 Years ago, there was a trolley running between Strathmere and Townsend's Inlet:

On Saturday evening, August 11, the Strathmere Improvement Association is bringing back the trolley!
As our way of thanking the Community for supporting us through your purchases of tee shirts, raffle tickets, etc., the SIA will be offering Free "Centennial Trolley Tours" around Strathmere that evening.
For the younger folks, at 4:00, 4:20 and 4:40, we will be providing 15-minute fun trolley rides around town.
For the "not-quite-so-young" crowd, we'll have 45-minute historic tours of the town at 5:00, 6:00 and 7:00.
Debbie Vandegrift and Ken Weaver will be the tour narrators, and they promise to regale you with many facts about Historic Strathmere. Some may even be true!
The trolley holds 25 people. We have agonized over whether to take reservations, but finally decided to just do this on a "first-come, first served" basis.
All tours will leave from in front of the Post Office.
Please get your friends together and put it on your calendar now!

Speaking of history, the August Issue of the Sea Isle Times has a great article here on Carol Baker's Strathmere website.
This Sunday, August 5 is the Strathmere Volunteer Fire Company's "Safety in Strathmere" Day.
From 2 pm to 4 pm there will be giveaways, demonstrations and treats for the children.
Bring your children and grandchildren to the Firehouse on Sunday!

Lasy year's fun:

The Schiavo Library has multiple events on the next three Thursdays:
This Thursday, August 2, local children’s author Audrey Vernick will visit the library at 1:00pm (no children's programs that morning).
On Thursday, August 9, there will be a Family Scavenger Hunt at 7:00pm. Contact the Library for more details.
And on Thursday, August 16, the Library will present their Second Annual Local Authors' Night. Everyone is welcome to come out and visit with some outstanding local authors. They will display, promote and discuss their books, which will include: local novels, memoirs, children’s books, young adult books and biographies. There will be light refreshments and interesting discussions between 7:00 and 8:00pm.
On Friday, August 10, at 8:00pm we will hold our August SIA Meeting at the Firehouse.
We will draw the winner of Centennial Cruiser Bike Raffle (only ten more days to get your tickets)!
We will also have nominations and elections of 2013 SIA Officers, and award the Bergus Prizes for Scholarship to our local scholars.

Bike Raffle tickets and tee shirts may be purchased at 212 Bayview Drive. Call 263-6846 first in case we're out...

First prize in the raffle will be our Centennial Cruiser and second prize will be two tickets to the Phils - Nationals game August 24.

Both will be on sale outside Twisties on the 18th...

And once again, check out Carol Baker's wonderful Strathmere History website at
Remember, you can find almost all of our past newsletters here.

The Strathmere Improvement Association includes all owners in Strathmere and Whale Beach and many visitors. It was founded over 60 years ago as a community organization with the simple objective of making Strathmere a better place. We are proud of the organization's many accomplishments over the years.
The SIA is keeping the annual dues at $10 per adult family member. The dues and the fund raisers provide for the Fourth of July Parade and our share of the Christmas Party. We have also donated money to help pay for extra State Police protection.
NOTE: Since most of you never formally "signed up" as members, obviously we cannot "force" you to pay dues, which are really more like (non-deductible) donations anyway.
If you don't pay, we will still keep you on our newsletter distribution. The only penalty will be that you can't vote in our (mostly uncontested) elections!
Nevertheless, we really hope you see enough value in our projects and enjoy the newsletters enough so that you'll contribute $10 per adult family member. Thanks!
Please send dues payments to SIA at PO Box 57, Strathmere, NJ 08248. Remember to tell us your correct e-mail address!
Also, please let us know if you have comments or suggestions for the newsletter or for SIA in general, or if you'd like us to change your e-mail address in our records.
You can contact us by responding to this e-mail at or by mailing SIA at PO Box 57.
Celebrate Our Strathmere Centennial!

Thanks very much for your continuing support of the Strathmere Improvement Association!
