October 18: Snapshot Day
This day highlights New Jersey libraries. Librarians all over the state report what was happening in their libraries that day. The statistics are amazing! For example, last year on Snapshot Day over 287,000 people visited their local library, 190,000 items were circulated, over 37,000 reference questions were answered and over 1,300 programs were offered. Yeah, New Jersey! We love our libraries!

And the winner is…
The winner of our popularity contest, that is.
Our most popular books this summer were Dead Wake: the last crossing of the Lusitania by Erik Larson and Property of a Noblewoman by Danielle Steel.
Children’s books: Big Nate flips out by Lincoln Pierce and Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli
DVD: Bridge of Spies
Children’s DVD: Zootopia

Mah Jongg
Mah Jongg continues here at the library, but days and hours vary. Everyone welcome; just call the library to get up-to-date information.

Have you read these?
Here are some of the new books just ordered for the Schiavo Library:

If you have suggestions for new books for our collection, please call or email (609 486-6265 or info@strathmerelibrary.org).
We love to hear from our patrons.

Thanks for your donations all year around. We use the proceeds from our used book sales to buy the new bestsellers.

Strathmere History Videos

In August of 2015, Ken Weaver gave a talk and slideshow of “Early Strathmere History” to the residents of Strathmere. First up below is the actual video of the presentation which features old photos from people in Strathmere and the Strathmere website and a ton of Strathmere history from Ken.

The second video is a “Then and Now” presentation with old images of homes and buildings in Strathmere and what they look like now.

September: National Preparedness Month
The theme this year is “Don’t Wait. Communicate. Make Your Emergency Plan Today.” Here at the shore we realize the importance of being prepared for emergencies. Whether it’s just moving deck furniture or making a plan for evacuation. It’s always good to PLAN ahead even when it turns out not to be necessary (like when a hurricane changes direction and drifts around in the ocean). So, make your plan today! For more information: www.ready.gov/september

September News

Strathmere Stories-
The SIA has embarked on a project to create a video archive of our history, as told by our longtime Strathmere and Whale Beach families and current residents and visitors. Everyone has a story, a memory to share. What's yours? Come to our upcoming open mic night, August 25 at Schiavo Library, and take part in the excitement. Or you can borrow a video camera and record your family's story as well. Email us for more details. We'll show a clip or two of what we've begun to gather at the August 19 meeting.
2016 Bergus Laurence Scholarship Awards were presented by Katie Laurence at the July meeting. Pictured below: John Pond, Matthew Pond, Michaela and Valerie Voegtlin. (Not pictured: Brian and CJ Furey.)
