SIA Newsletter 7 17 2013 - Yard Sale Volunteers Needed; Traveling Turtles Tomorrow (Thursday) Evening; Yard Sale; Meeting Minutes; UTBP Races; Strathmere Caps & Visors; SFEC Tournament; Community Beach Party; Calendar

To All Strathmere and Whale Beach Homeowners and Visitors,

The SIA is looking for a few volunteers to help set up yardsale tables Saturday morning at 7am at the firehouse. Won't take long to do but much easier with help. Still time to grab a table to sell your own stuff. Call Linda (263-4117) or Janet (856-423-5543). Thanks!
Tomorrow, Thursday July 18, 2013 the Schiavo Library will be hosting a Wetlands Institute program “Traveling Turtles.”
The program is sponsored jointly by the Library and the Strathmere Fishing and Environmental Club.
It will take place at 6:00pm in the library’s parking lot. This will be followed by a terrapin release at the boat ramp. This is a wonderful program for the whole family and all are welcome to attend. It was a huge hit last year - here are some pictures:

There is no charge to attend the program, but donations, which are tax deductible, would be greatly appreciated.

The SIA Yard sale will be held at the Firehouse this Saturday morning, July 20 at 8 am. Lots of neat stuff to buy!

The minutes from our SIA July Meeting held Friday evening, July 12 are attached.
Mark your calendar for the next SIA meeting on August 9 at 8pm. Mike McMahon, from McMahon Insurance will talk about flood insurance and John Halbruner from Hyland Design will talk about structural options.
We expect FEMA to release new flood maps in the next few weeks. The "V" zones are expected to be reduced, and perhaps the elevation requirements also.

If you haven't paid your 2013 SIA dues yet, we ask you to please do so.
Info on dues is at the end of this newsletter.

We told you about the TriResort Lifeguard Championships held Monday evening. Our home team won!
Upper Township won the Singles Row.

Upper also won the Doubles Row

Here they prepare the boat...

Congratulations to our Beach Patrol!

The Beach Patrol is also sponsoring their 6-Mile Bay Race for MS, starting at the Deauville at 6:30 this Monday night July 22 (paddleboarders start at 5:45).
It's always fun to watch all those boats take off down the bay.

The SIA continues to sell neat new Strathmere caps ($15) and visors ($10).
They are available at 212 Bayview Drive (609-263-6846). Get several - for yourself and for gifts!

The Strathmere Fishing and Environmental Club is currently holding their Tuna Classic, for fishermen who like to venture out into the Atlantic.

Details here.

The CFSWB Auction previously scheduled for July 27 has been canceled for this year.

Mark your calendar for Saturday evening, August 3. The SIA is planning a Strathmere Community Beach Party (games and music) for all.
It will be held on the beach between Sumner and Tecumseh from 7:00 to 9:00 pm.
Old-fashioned children's games (bring a flashlight for the ghost crab hunt) with prizes for the kids!

Music and sing-along by Jim Maher

Our February 11, 2013 Newsletter on flood zones and flood insurance is posted on the Upper Township website here (under General Information... Announcements... Super Storm Sandy). We suggest you make the website location one of your "favorites" or "bookmarks", as you'll probably want to refer to it as the BFE / FIRM saga continues to unfold...

And once again, check out Carol Baker's wonderful Strathmere History website at

The Strathmere Improvement Association includes all owners in Strathmere and Whale Beach and many visitors. It was founded in 1951 as a community organization with the simple objective of making Strathmere a better place. We are proud of the organization's many accomplishments over the years.
The SIA is keeping the annual dues at $10 per adult family member. The dues and the fund raisers provide for the Fourth of July Parade and our share of the Christmas Party. We conducted a number of Centennial events last year, and also donated money to help pay for extra State Police protection, and to residents affected by Sandy.
NOTE: Since most of you never formally "signed up" as members, obviously we cannot "force" you to pay dues, which are really more like (non-deductible) donations anyway.
If you don't pay, we will still keep you on our newsletter distribution. The only penalty will be that you can't vote in our (mostly uncontested) elections!
Nevertheless, we really hope you see value in our projects and enjoy the newsletters enough so that you'll contribute $10 per adult family member.

Please send dues payments to SIA at PO Box 57, Strathmere, NJ 08248. Remember to tell us your correct e-mail address!
Also, please let us know if you have comments or suggestions for the newsletter or for SIA in general, or if you'd like us to change your e-mail address in our records.
You can contact us by responding to this e-mail at or by mailing SIA at PO Box 57.

Thanks very much for your continuing support of the Strathmere Improvement Association!
