Obituary for Elizabeth "Lizu" Bergus - Memorial Service Saturday in Strathmere

Elizabeth Grace "Lizu" Bergus, RN, of Pitman and Strathmere, daughter of Donald and Elizabeth Bergus, passed away November 2. She was a Regional Hospital Administrator with a World Background.

Born in Beirut, Lebanon, to American parents attached to the U.S. diplomatic service, Elizabeth went on to live in Paris, France; Cairo, Egypt; Ankara, Turkey; Khartoum, Sudan, as well as Washington DC and Los Angeles, California.
In the United States, she had a home base at family residences in Strathmere and Philadelphia, and she went on to attend the University of Pennsylvania, graduating from the School of Nursing in 1973.
Settling in New Jersey, she spent 21 years at South Jersey Healthcare, one of the region’s largest hospital systems, where she rose to become Administrative Director for Peri-operative Services, directing sixteen in-hospital and outpatient surgical units spread over three medical centers, with responsibility for 15,000 cases a year. A respected
colleague of the physicians with whom she worked and a strong advocate for her nurses and technicians, she was devoted to the welfare of the thousands of patients they served. She never tired of meeting patients and responding to their concerns; and she prided herself on arriving early to greet staff in the morning and being there to thank them for their work at the end of the day.
Later, as a senior consultant with IBM’s Houston-based HealthLink division, she advised some of the nation’s largest healthcare providers on managing and improving patient care. Throughout her life she continued to travel widely and was an avid reader.
She is survived by her son Alexander Bergus Conner; brother George Ravdin Bergus (Rebecca); sister Priscilla Bergus Laurence (Andrew); her past husband Brian, and many other loving family members.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday November 17 at 2:00 pm at the Strathmere United Methodist Church.

At her request, in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia Pediatric Cancer Treatment Center.
This obituary may be found at http://godfreyfuneral.com/bergus-elizabeth-grace/, where you may leave a condolence.

She will be missed by the Strathmere community.
