Aftermath of Hurricane Sandy:
We
are so thankful that Hurricane Sandy had very little impact on our library.
It’s high and dry with no water or wind damage. We had to close for one week as
access to Strathmere was limited and we still don’t have phone service.
Unfortunately,
not everyone was as lucky. Many older homes were flooded and home owners and
residents are busy cleaning up. Strathmere’s community organizations will be coordinating a relief fund for locals hard hit by flood damage. I’ll send out more information as it becomes
available. This will be an opportunity
to help friends and neighbors right here in Strathmere.
Revised Check-out Periods:
For the winter we will extend check-out periods for books (and audio books) to 30 days and for DVD’s to 14 days. This should help if you are an infrequent visitor to town. So, no excuses – stop in and borrow a book, audio book or DVD. You can also renew by phoning us or emailing the library.
November
is Picture Book Month:
Share a picture book with your
favorite child. Here are some new ones to try:
Some
Good News for Libraries:
A recent study of reading and library habits
of Young Adults found that 83% of young Americans (ages 16-29) read a book in
the past year: 75% read a print book, 19% read an e-book and 11% listened to an
audiobook. Also, 60% of Americans under age 30 used the library in the past
year. The Pew Research Center’s project
showed that although young adults consume books in different formats, they’re
still reading! Yeah!!Christine Rohrman, Library Director
